The Problem

According to a recent IDC study, “between 2006 and 2010, the information added annually to the digital universe will increase more than six fold.” As the amount of data created grows, so does the volume of data that needs to be managed and retained for long periods of time. It becomes a constant daily struggle to control, protect and leverage this information. Eventually, IT infrastructure and policies begin to break down under the ever increasing load.

One of the first places that begins to show stress in an IT environment is the backup environment. Many IT departments today are not able to deliver effective SLA’s back to the business because of the problems they encounter with increasing data volume, shrinking backup windows or failed backup jobs. To add to the problem, corporations are now mandating longer retention periods, and shorter SLA’s which is causing a significant cost burden for the average company’s backup budget.

Another area that starts to feel the pressure is archive. Historically, people have created silos for archiving based on specific applications and built on various technologies. Often, decisions for archiving were made without proper understanding of the difference between backup and archive and were made based on low acquisition cost rather than on the right technology to solve the problem. As demand for performance, authenticity and integrity emerge these technologies fall short in providing a true enterprise archiving strategy that will reduce costs as well as streamline operations.

As we add more and more information to our environments we experience server sprawl. As these server farms grow, so does the impact on data center floor space, power and cooling. You also need to consider the issue of “green computing” as you increase your carbon footprint. What’s in a name?

In Ireland, the countryside is scattered with over 100 “round towers” that date back to the 10th century. The round towers, often located on the tops of hills, served as a safe haven for the locals and their valued assets when under attack by the Vikings or in other times of instability.
